Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some frequently asked questions about tutoring. If your question isn’t answered here, please send me a message using the contact form.
1. Where do you tutor?
On weekday evenings, you have a choice of: OttawaU Campus (Desmarais building, food court and other spots), a coffee shop downtown, or my apartment in the Byward Market. On the weekends, I can tutor you in all the above locations or at the Carleton University libary. You can indicate your preference when you book your session.
If you’re comfortable coming to my place, that’s actually an ideal location because it’s quiet and I have a big table with lots of lighting. Check out my tutoring locations page for more information.
2. What courses can you help me with?
In general, I can help you with all first and second year undergraduate courses in MICRO and MACRO economics offered by the University of Ottawa and Carleton University. I can also help you if you’re a graduate student in Carleton’s Public Administration Master’s program, or if you’re taking another graduate program (such as an MBA) that requires you to take an introductory/intermediate course in economics.
Whether you’re having trouble with utility, perfect competition, Hicksian/Marhsalian demand, Legrangians, convexity, Solow growth models, etc., etc., I can help you understand what’s going on!
3. How are you qualified to tutor?
I have a BA and MA in Economics from the University of Western Ontario, which is ranked as one of the top Economics schools in Canada. I’ve tutored over 200 students since 2007, and I’ve also run large scale prep sessions before exams for hundreds of students.
My ability to tutor comes not only from my education but also from my knack for explaining things in easy, everyday language, and my ability to break down complex mathematical problems into small steps that you can understand. My students choose me because I speak to you at whatever level you’re at – something that most profs don’t do. I care immensely about how well my students learn, and I’m committed to staying on time and on topic during tutoring sessions to make sure my students get real value out of them.
4. What do I need to bring to my tutoring session?
Make sure to bring your course notes, textbook, practice problem sets – basically, all the relevant materials you use when studying. It’s helpful for me to see your notes because profs differ in their teaching approach so if I can see your notes, I can make sure to teach you to do things the way your prof wants you to.
5. How do I pay you?
You can pay by cash at your session. I also accept credit card payments online (see Booking Your Session), and you can also pay by Interac email transfer (message me in advance for instructions).
6. Do you tutor in French or any other languages?
I tutor only in English, however I can explain some things in Mandarin Chinese, which is especially helpful for international students from China.
If you’re taking courses in French but you speak English well enough to carry on a conversation, I may still be able to help you, as the concepts of Economics are identical no matter the language. Before booking your session, make sure you can understand conversational English at roughly the level of a CNN news broadcast
